For those of you who don’t know our office manager, Nancy Callahan, she wears many hats. At Aria, she is involved with finance, HR, and more, but outside of work, Nancy has a taste for travel that has taken her all over the world. I recently sat down with Nancy to discuss her most memorable trips and get a glimpse into her favorite places to visit.
Cuba
Nancy traveled to Cuba earlier this year and she says the 1950s-era cars, Havana’s New Orleans style architecture and the country’s lush hilly tobacco region are all must-sees. With US and Cuban diplomatic relations only recently restored, Nancy advises anyone interested in visiting Cuba to go before it changes, but be prepared. Cuba’s tourism infrastructure isn’t quite up to par, so travelers shouldn’t expect all of the amenities they may be used to. However, she says, that it’s well worth it!
Petra, Jordan
While planning is key for most trips, Nancy also believes that some of the best travel experiences are spontaneous. One example is when she and her husband were in Israel and decided to make a last-minute daytrip to Petra, Jordan. Petra was once a thriving trading center dating back to 400 B.C. Indiana Jones fans might recognize its gate from The Last Crusade. For Nancy, travelling to Petra was an unexpected surprise at the end of a long, bumpy desert road, but she says that the place felt like a time capsule and was truly unforgettable.
Thailand
Thailand is one of Nancy’s favorite travel destinations because there is so much to do. She recommends relaxing on the beautiful white sandy beaches, shopping in the bustling markets of Bangkok and taking a ride on an elephant. Of course, Nancy explains that one of the most important aspects of every vacation is sampling new foods and her favorite dish in Thailand is Panang Gai.
The Grand Canyon
Back here in the states, Nancy loves traveling to the Grand Canyon in Arizona. In fact, she liked her first trip to the national park so much that she went back a second time. She suggests white water rafting on the Colorado River and hiking into Phantom Ranch which is nestled in the heart of the Canyon.
Martha’s Vineyard
Closer to home, Nancy loves going to Martha’s Vineyard and thinks that each town on the island is very unique. Her favorite is Oak Bluffs with its gingerbread cottages, laid back vibe and interesting history. There’s also a good supply of sweets on the island. Nancy’s go-to spot is Mad Martha’s for ice-cream, but she’s looking forward to trying Back Door Donuts on her next visit.
So, what far off destination is Nancy off to next? Istanbul is high on her list and Nancy has never been to Ireland, despite having the Irish roots in her last name. Where do you think Nancy should go next? Share your favorite travel destinations with us.
