As we gear up for the holiday season and the start of 2018, it’s a perfect time to reflect on the past year and everything we’re grateful for. That’s why we want to give thanks to 10 blogs, and the people behind them, that we think do a superb job drilling down into the complexities of healthcare IT, and highlighting how exciting, innovative, and inspiring this industry can be.
After our combined decades of experience in the business, we know a great healthcare blog when we see it. Here are our 10 favorites:
Health Business Blog is focused on the business of healthcare and policy, discussing topics such as technology, pharma, biotech, and medical devices. Featuring written blogs and podcast-style interviews with top industry executives, the blog was founded by seasoned healthcare business consultant David Williams, who created it in order to share his expertise and opinions on health IT and policy.
Pharmalot is the longstanding, go-to resource for news and insights involving the pharmaceutical industry. It began as its own standalone blog around 10 years ago, but in 2015 moved over to STAT News. The man behind the blog, Ed Silverman, has been reporting on pharma for more than 20 years, including time reporting for The Wall Street Journal.

The Health Care Blog has acquired a reputation as one of the most respected independent voices in the healthcare industry. It highlights the business of healthcare, national healthcare policy, technology, and the new ideas shaking up the industry every day. It’s published by Matthew Holt, who brings 15 years of experience in healthcare as a researcher, generalist forecaster, strategist and keynote speaker.
POLITICO Morning e-Health gives a daily dose of news at “the intersection of healthcare and technology,” straight from the POLITICO news team. It highlights everything from legislation and policy updates to the eHealth tweet of the day, new technology innovations and implementations, and more. The blog, and its associated e-newsletter, is written in bite-sized, digestible briefs so readers can get in, get the facts, and get out.
Hospital Impact is written and curated by the team at Fierce Healthcare, a trade publication highly regarded in the industry, and is specifically geared towards healthcare executives. The blog looks at the impacts that changing healthcare regulations have on hospitals, and also covers news and commentary related to hospital function, programs, services, and general healthcare news.
hfm blog highlights topics on the forefront of healthcare finances. One of several publications from the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA), the blog features commentary and insights from financial planners and leaders of government and industry, with coverage investigating the impacts that healthcare technology and IT innovations have on the bottom line.
HISTalk discusses everything from industry trends to rumors, corporate and product news, analysis, and opinions on the latest in healthcare IT. It was founded in 2003 by an anonymous hospital employee –self-described as a “cynical healthcare IT blowhard” – as a way to share his/her thoughts on the industry, and has evolved into a must-read for many in the industry.
New York Times Well brings the renowned reporting of the New York Times to this blog focused on health and wellness. Curated by Times editor Tara Parker-Pope, the blog dives into health news, medical research, and expert opinions to provide readers with practical advice to improve their health, and the health of their family members, on a daily basis.
