March 5th, 2020 was a significant day for Aria Marketing, our fellow PR practitioners, and the Healthcare industry in general. This was the day that the HIMSS annual conference was canceled for the first time in the show’s 58-year history, ushering in a dramatic change in the trade show landscape as, one by one, all the conferences we had attended for years were canceled, postponed, or rescheduled as virtual events due to COVID-19.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been devastating to global society and economic activity, and we will surely be coping with its aftereffects for many years to come.  However, there have been some silver linings, such as less pollution, normalization of remote work, accelerated use of telemedicine.  In our work, we have also seen a real boost for health care PR and thought leadership.  Healthcare and the ideas and technologies that make it work have become headline news, and while our clients have benefitted from the 24/7 COVID-19 news focus, we are starting to see the total dominance of that issue in the media begin to give way to interest in other stories.  As a result, we are working with our clients to start preparing to adapt their strategies to a next phase, where it’s not “all pandemic all the time,” and other news and ideas can get attention.

As most of us in the healthcare IT sphere know, telehealth adoption has exploded thanks to COVID-19. In fact, according to a recent survey from our client Kyruus, 75% of patients had their first virtual visit in 2020 and Frost & Sullivan forecasts a sevenfold growth in telehealth usage by 2025.

 

At the start of the pandemic, Office for Civil Rights (OCR) at the Department for Health and Human Services (HHS) eased some HIPAA security rules to aid with the rapid shift to virtual care, particularly specifically allowing health systems to use non-compliant remote communication technology such as Zoom, Skype or FaceTime without facing penalties. While the move sped up the adoption of telemedicine, it didn’t eliminate the security and privacy risks associated with them.
